One of the oldest homes that have been established in Atlanta can also be visited in Marietta, Georgia. Popularized by Gone with The Wind, the Root House has been typical of its time and place of a columned mansion. Restored to become home and grounds to its 1860 appearance, interactive displays, and modern touchscreens it has been added to help tell the story of the Root family and its enslaved house servants.
History
The Root House was built in 1845 for Hannah and William Root, the early settlers of Marietta. William was one of the municipality’s earliest merchants and also its first druggist. Originally born in Philadelphia in 1815, William moved to Marietta to open a drug store in August 1839. A year after that, he married the then Hannan Rhemer Simpson. The couple purchased a lot for their house to be built in 1844.
The home remained to be a single-family residence up until the 1940s after it was subdivided into three apartments. During the late 1980s, the Root house had fallen its cracks and was up for demolition. After the house was formally considered as one of Marietta’s oldest treasures, the preservation of the property began. After being moved due to various processes to its present location, the house was restored to its 1845 appearance through amazing architectural analysis. EZ Marietta Junk Removal
